Financing your Journey

By far the most cost-effective strategy for studying abroad is to enter a semester-long program, because the tuition and room and board that you would normally pay can be redirected to fund your study abroad experience. Students maintain their enrollment at Duquesne University while in a study abroad program, and, in most cases, your Duquesne University-based academic scholarships remain in place to help you fund your study abroad. Read through the following information about Category I and Category II programs, because your selection of a category of program has important financial implications.

Tuition and Fees:
Study abroad programs fall into two different categories at Duquesne:

  • Category I programs - Students pay their regular Duquesne tuition and fees. All Duquesne academic scholarships and grants apply.
  • Category II programs - Students pay their regular Duquesne tuition and fees plus any differential program costs above Duquesne tuition. Duquesne academic scholarships and grants DO NOT apply to Category II programs.

Comparing Categories: It’s All in the Duquesne University-based Scholarships!

All federal and state financial aid is applicable toward study abroad unless the program is offered in the summer, or otherwise indicated. All students should meet with a Financial Aid oficer to discuss their plans to study abroad and how their aid package may apply.

NOTE: Students do not pay any tuition directly to any study abroad program provider. If a student receives a bill for tuition, you are requested to forward it to the OIP immediately.

All costs are estimates and subject to change.

Study Abroad Fee

  • For students of Approved Study Abroad Programs: Duquesne University will bill students a $950 studyabroad fee. An additional deposit housing, etc may be required by a third-party provider.
  • For Italian Campus students: Italian Campus students will pay this $950 fee in the form of their deposit.
  • For Short-term, Student Teaching, Summer Programs, or Villa Nazareth: The $950 fee does not apply.

Medex Traveler’s Assistance Coverage Fee

All students studying abroad are required to purchase Medex. The University engages this on behalf of all students and will bill you at the rate of $15/month abroad. This fee will be $45 for students attending the Italian Campus Program, $60 for students attending an approved study abroad program, and variable for those attending a shorter program.

Medex coverage is NOT medical insurance. Rather, it is an emergency assistance service facilitating a medical situation in a foreign hospital (e.g., translation services, vetting a hospital for quality of service, communicating to family, etc.); a medical transportation service providing evacuation and repatriation (costs covered here); and travel assistance for family to join a hospitalized student. We are pleased to have this service in place for all of our students, and you will be provided with further details and a personal card to carry as part of your study abroad package.

Housing and Meals, Airfare, Personal and Travel Expenses

Students arrange and pay for their own airfare, room and board and personal expenses directly to the program provider. Room and board is variously arranged and billed depending on your program of choice. Costs for items will vary widely depending on the program (see “estimated costs” section on each of the program summaries).

Students attending the Duquesne University Italian Campus Program pay the same Housing and Meal fees as they would at Duquesne’s home campus and will be billed directly by Duquesne.

Special Petition Programs

If you are petitioning to attend a program not currently included in the above lists, you must consult with the OIP to determine into which category your program of interest would fall. The Study Abroad Advisor can assist you with this discussion.

Special Cases: tuition waivers, tuition exchange or special discounts

In accordance with University policy, students who are attending Duquesne University with tuition waivers (Duquesne employees, and members of their families), tuition exchanges (through the Commission on Independent Colleges , the Tuition Exchange, or similar organizations), or discounts must pay the costs of their selected program of study abroad, including tuition and airfare.

Students will be billed for regular Duquesne University tuition and the university fee. The Duquesne University tuition will be adjusted to reflect the exact tuition cost of the external program. The university fee can be waived if a comparable fee is paid to the external program. Since tuition remission and tuition exchange will not apply during the semester abroad, the student may want to consider applying for other types of scholarships and financial aid. Contact the Office of Financial Aid for assistance.

NOTE: The Villa Nazareth Program and the University’s Italian Campus Program in Rome are exceptions to the above and honor all tuition waivers, scholarships, and discounts.

Cancellation Policy

If a student cancels participation in a program after committing to study abroad, Duquesne will bill the student’s account for any nonrefundable payments that Duquesne has made or is obligated to make for the student’s study abroad program.
