College Year in Athens was founded in 1962 by Wellesley College graduate Ismene Phylactopoulou (1907-1983). The focus of the program is “to guide students to a greater understanding and appreciation of Greece , ancient, medieval, and modern, and of its neighboring countries.” The curriculum is organized in two tracks: Ancient Greek Civilization and East Mediterranean Area Studies, offered over two semesters. Participants may choose to participate for either semester or both.
The foundations of Western civilization were built by the ancient Greeks, first by the peoples of Minoan Crete and Mycenae , later by the citizens of city-states such as Athens , Sparta , Corinth , Delphi , and Thebes . The Hellenistic legacy to the West is enormous, ranging from the origins of democracy to the foundations of western philosophy and theology, languages, art and aesthetics. Athens is an ideal place to study this rich heritage and to experience the zest for living typical of modern Greek culture.
