Ireland
International Study Center at
National University of Ireland, Galway

Beginning in Fall 2007 Duquesne University is designating the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUI, Galway) as a Duquesne University International Study Center. A study center is a study abroad site at a partner university in another country. Duquesne University has selected this partner university for its commitment to academic excellence, outstanding service to students, cultural richness, and geographic desirability. These qualities make the International Study Center ideal for Duquesne students studying abroad. At an International Study Center students will have the opportunity to travel and study together as an integrated group during their semester abroad, choose from an extensive menu of pre-approved courses, and enjoy tailored support services facilitated by an on-site coordinator. Students will learn and grow in a new culture with the support of a community of Duquesne students.

The University and the City
Both the National University of Ireland in Galway and the city of Galway itself create a welcoming and rich cultural and academic environment for Duquesne students studying abroad. Established in 1845 as Queen's College Galway, NUI Galway has an international reputation for excellence in research and teaching and for prioritizing the needs of its students. The University now serves over 15,000 students, 1000 of whom are international students, through its seven faculties (i.e. Schools) - Arts, Science, Commerce, Engineering, Celtic Studies, Medicine & Health Sciences, and Law.

Galway is the third largest city in the Republic of Ireland, and is located on its west coast. Considered one of Europe’s fastest growing urban centers, Galway is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with a thriving cultural and commercial community. Galway is a lively, energetic city throughout the year.  The Irish call Galway the “Cultural Capital of Ireland” since the resurgence of the Gaelic culture has found its home there. The city, with its medieval streets, waterways, extensive range of shopping facilities, wealth of music sessions and other cultural events, is a place to be treasured. The University, situated close to the heart of Galway, enjoys an intimate relationship with the city and during the academic year, 15% of the population of the city are students.

Housing and Meals
NUI Galway has a wide array of attractive and affordable housing options for students. A number of modern and spacious townhouse-type developments, situated close to the University, are available. Duquesne will reserve rooms for all students studying at the NUI-Galway Study Center, but students will be responsible for confirming the space and making the appropriate financial arrangements directly to the Accommodations Office in Galway. OIP will assist in this process and provide detailed information.

In Ireland, the custom for most students is to occupy single bedrooms with shared common kitchens/living rooms and bathrooms in a three-to-six-person flat. Duquesne students will be integrated with Irish students with their housing assignments, because an important part of your study abroad experience will be to experience the richness of getting to know students from Ireland and other countries. All situations are “self-catering,” so there are no “meal plans” available. However, there are several restaurants and cafes provided on campus.

Services Provided
As a designated Duquesne University International Study Center, an on-site Irish graduate student will serve as a part-time Duquesne University Coordinator to plan special activities for the Duquesne students. Weekend cultural excursions in Ireland, occasional social and cultural events in the Galway area, and back-up support for Duquesne students will foster a sense of community among the Duquesne students studying there.

The NUI, Galway International Students Office also provides advice, information, and support services, including a three-day on-site orientation to Galway and the university, as well as arranging interesting and varied social and cultural activities for all Visiting Students. An impressive array of campus facilities and opportunities include a health clinic, fitness center, pub, and many academic, cultural, and sports clubs.
