2007 Short-Term Study Abroad Programs


Duquesne University professors offer a rich menu of short-term (1-4 weeks) study abroad programs offered during the summer. These programs are typically confirmed in early spring. As a guide, please see the following list of programs offered in 2007, as many of these repeat each year. Please check with the faculty directors and/or OIP for changes or updates on short-term programs. Application information will be provided directly through the professor/department offering the program.


Asian Study Tour: International Management Practice – Japan May 9-20, 2007

Faculty Director: Drs. Marlin and Kurke, School of Business Administration

This course is for three credits(GRBUS 617) that meet the university cultural requirement and/or elective, general business school elective, and possible International Business major elective. It provides students with an in-depth exposure to cultural and business practices of Japan (including Kyoto and Tokyo). This program will include visits to areas of cultural importance, classroom sessions, company visits and other presentations.


European Study Tour: Ireland and Hungary May 11-28, 2007

Faculty Directors: Dr. Bill Spangler and Dr. David Wasieleski, School of Business Administration

This course is for 3 credits (GRBUS 637, Grad, IBUS 343, Undergrad) and provides students with an in-depth exposure to cultural, business and academic aspects of other nations. This year’s program centers around Ireland and Hungary. It involves a 2 ½ week trip to Ireland and Hungary (including Galway, Dublin, and Budapest), which will include visits to areas of cultural interest, classroom sessions, as well as company visits and other presentations.


Spanish Cultural Experience in Salamanca, Spain July 2-27 or July 2 to August 24, 2007

Faculty Directors: Dr. Francesca Colecchia and Dr. Gregorio Martin, McAnulty College of Liberal Arts

This four to eight week program offers students from 3 to 9 credits (MLGSP 411) from studying Spanish in Salamanca, Spain as well as four week-end field trips to sites of historical and cultural significance. The student will have the opportunity to perfect advanced language skills by immersing himself/herself in a complete Spanish environment.


International Communicable Disease Control and May 7-28, 2007

Healthcare Delivery in Hungary and South Africa

Faculty Directors: Dr. Greg Frazer and Bridget Calhoun, Rangos School of Health Sciences

This course offers three credits (HLTSC 290-91 and HLTSC 590-91) that meet health sciences electives requirement. Students and faculty will be visiting hospitals, ambulatory clinics and public health facilities so that students may gain first-hand experience in the health care systems


Exploring the Environment of ChinaAugust 2-17, 2007

Faculty Director: Edward Schroth, Bayer School of Natural and Environmental Sciences.

Three credits are offered for upper class undergraduates and graduate students in BSNES to explore first-hand China’s approach to control environmental pollution. Visits to universities, municipal environmental protection agencies of urban planning, water supply and air monitoring will enable both Chinese and American students to observe, discuss and analyze together China’s environmental policies and scientific progress and technological innovations.


Summer programs in Law June 4-22, 2007

Faculty Directors: Dr. Kirk W. Junker and Dr. Frank Liu, School of Law.

This program provides law students from all over the world the unique opportunity to discover and learn about the legal system in the country of China.


Health Care Ethics June 16-20, 2007

Faculty Directors: Dr. Aaron Mackler and Dr. Mary Therese Connors from.

This program consists of clinical placements (HCE 682) as ethicist-in-residence at one or more health care institutions in the Western Pennsylvania area and Uganda.


Social and Public Policies in Ireland May 7-24, 2007

Faculty Director: Dr. Joseph D. Yenerall, McAnulty School of Graduate Study

This is a field work based course (POLCR 598)that will focus on developing an understanding of the nature of, and current issues associated with, social and public policies in Ireland in the areas of health care, education, and the environment.

 

Global and International Education Studies in Namibia, Southern Africa July 11- August 11, 2007

Faculty Director: Dr. Rodney Hopson

This course (GIES 503) gives students an introduction to educational issues that beset an emerging democracy like Namibia, amidst the socio-historical context of education within the society.
