Below are a number of external funding sources to help finance your study abroad program. The OIP is available to assist you in applying for these scholarships.
BRIDGING SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDY IN JAPAN
Sponsored by the Association of Teachers of Japanese, Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan provide scholarship assistance of up to $4,000 to qualified students for study at an eligible program in Japan . www.colorado.edu/ealld/atj/Bridging/abroad.html
GILMAN SCHOLARSHIPS
Gilman Scholarships provide awards for study abroad for U.S. citizens who are receiving Pell Grants, a federal need-based financial aid grant under Title IV. This program is offered through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and is administered by the Institute of International Education . Selected recipients are awarded up to $5,000, depending on the length of their program to defray the costs of studying abroad. NATIONAL SECURITY EDUCATION PROGRAM (NSEP) - Undergraduate Program
Awards for intensive summer or academic term study abroad in non-traditional destinations are offered to freshmen and sophomores to foster their interest in international affairs. Awards for an academic term or year in non-traditional destinations are offered to juniors and seniors to increase their knowledge of other languages and cultures. Applications are available on-line through http://www.iie.org/nsep. Completed applications must be submitted to International programs by the first Monday in December for the following academic year.
NATIONAL SECURITY EDUCATION PROGRAM (NSEP) - Graduate International Fellowships
Awards of varying lengths are offered to graduate students to pursue the study of languages and cultures deemed critical to U.S. national security. To be eligible, the student must be a U.S. citizen and either enrolled in or applying to a graduate program at an accredited U.S. college or university. Applications are available on-line through http://www.iie.org/nsep. Applications are typically due in the end of January for the following academic year.
PHI KAPPA PHI STUDY ABROAD GRANTS-
Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying broad. Fifty $1,000 grants are awarded each year. Applications are available on-line through the Phi Kappa Phi Website.
Applications are due in February for the following academic year.
CLAN DONALD EDUCATIONAL AND CHARITABLE TRUST
Scholarship for University Study in Scotland
This is a scholarship for $7,500 for graduate study at a Scottish University of the applicant’s choice for the 2008-2009 academic year. Applications should be in the form of a letter including a resume, the applicant’s prior course of studies, studies proposed to be undertaken in cotland, the intended University, the applicant’s reason for choosing the University, and how the scholarship can promote Scottish-American relations. GLOBAL STUDIES GRANT FOR STUDENT TRAVEL AND STUDY ABROAD
Designed to support foreign language training and other academic studies abroad, this grant provides supplemental funds for American students who already are studying abroad under the auspices of an official study abroad program conducted by an accredited academic institution. GSF seeks to support a formative experience abroad for the recipient, who also must share this experience with others upon his or her return – ideally, with multiple audiences and varied media. We are particularly interested in funding the study of strategically significant countries and languages. More information.
